Case Study: 2015 and 2016 Pac-12 China Game in Shanghai

Inaugural regular season college basketball game in Shanghai

· Case Study,University Tour

The Pac-12 Conference hosted their inaugural Pac-12 China Game in 2015, the first regular season basketball game played in China at the professional or collegiate level. The first year the Washington Huskies faced off against the Texas Longhorns.

In 2016, the China Game featured a showdown between two academic and athletic powerhouses, the Stanford Cardinal and Harvard Crimson. The week-long trip involved a visit to Alibaba headquarters in Hangzhou, exhibition games against Jiaotong University in Shanghai, sightseeing and cultural experiences, and culminating with the first regular season game for both teams.

Objective: Act as an extension of the Pac-12 Conference to ensure the tour and China Game run smoothly.

  • Unite all Pac-12 local partners to execute daily events over the seven-day tour
  • Needed flexible staffing to cover the variety of on-the-ground needs of the Conference as gaps and problems arose.
  • Providing real-time photography of the tour for the Pac-12’s US-based digital team.

Our Work

Working under Dragon Group Asia, Logan provided on the ground support for the Pac-12 Conference staff and both teams. We worked closely with the Pac-12 Conference to fill any gaps in their team, providing bilingual team members who could think on their feet and problem solve in the moment.

Prior to the tour, we worked to source local practice facilities, site checks of venues and various locations in Shanghai, as well as coordination with local alumni groups to drive ticket sales and alumni engagement.

Our duties included sourcing materials, advance set-up of practice facilities, security briefing, VIP check-in on game day, additional transportation needs, and game day presentation. Acting as an extension of the Pac-12 Conference, we supported the team in a personalized way that complimented the tour agency and local university and government partners.

One Pac-12 Conference staff member described our team as “the grease that keeps the gears going” and our consistent commitment to going above and beyond has helped the Pac-12 Conference host two China Games, with a third scheduled for November, 2017.

The student-athletes had a memorable experience and the game continues to gain international and local exposure.
